The Coalition Signatories
The Appropriation Art Coalition reflects the broad spectrum of Canada’s art community. The coalition now numbers over 600 artists, curators, directors, educators, writers, associations and organizations from the art sector. All have come together to express their concern over the state of copyright policy for artists and the future of ‘Appropriation Art’. The coalition includes representation from numerous galleries, museums and artist-run centres, all providing critical support, facilities and exposure for Canadian artists. Curators, directors, board members, programmers, from galleries both large and small have also added their support. The coalition includes deans, professors and educators from Canadian Universities and Colleges across the country. There is representation from cultural founders and commercial gallery owners; from writers, theorists and collectors in all areas of the arts. The associations and organizations supporting this issue represent thousands of members from across Canada. For example the IMAA /AAMI (The Independent Media Arts Alliance) contains 82 artist-run centres and over 12,000 members. CAMDO (Canadian Art Museum Directors’ Organization) is an association of directors from 76 leading galleries, artist-run centres and arts organizations across Canada. The CMA (Canadian Museums Association) is the national organization that supports the Canadian museum community, comprising over 2,000 members. We find associations like the Alberta Media Arts Alliance or Intermission Artists Society in Vancouver; artist-run centres such as Stride Gallery in Calgary, Western Front in Vancouver, Woodland Cultural Centre in Ontario, and the Calgary Society of Independent Film makers; arts magazines like Blackflash in Saskatoon; not-for-profit corporations like Art Metropole in Toronto, founded by General Idea. Together the Appropriation Art Coalition represents thousands of concerned individuals who produce and support Canadian Culture.
